The hands represent the instrument of the conscious will. To have them cut off would be the experience of impotence, the inability to do in the world, the inability to shape one’s own life…Only when we use our hands in ways that are true to our own nature we can be responsible in the world, for then we have the strength to stand by our work.

Hands mean our acts, so… it will depend on our mind, how should we act… and acts express distinct functions, including creative and authoritative acts which are symbolized by the wand of the magician, or the finger-dwarfs of creative play, and the mace of the king or the fist of power and strength… symbolic extensions of the hand… To lose a wand or a finger is to lose one’s creative fantasy and one’s childlike vitality, perhaps the sacrifice of something new.   The creative hands and the executive hands…

The Magician, in the Tarot Trumps, holds his wand in his left hand, his power is not of the intellect but is natural…

The power of ambition –right hand – and the power of imagination –left hand, come together in the warmth of the hand as healer, the power of feeling: soothing, rubbing, warming, slapping, and begging.  The lines of our fate cross our palms, and here we are nailed.

The three functions of the hand –fingers, fist, and palm – are then creativity, authority, and feeling… Any wound of either of them is a wound to the function, a wound that affects our grip on things, how to handle the world and the soul.
